About This Print

Chocolat Dancing in the Irish and American Bar (1896) captures one of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's most electrifying subjects — Rafael Padilla, known as "Chocolat", the first Black circus performer to achieve fame in France. Lautrec sketched him with the same raw energy and affection he reserved for the dancers of the Moulin Rouge: fast lines, bold movement, no sentimentality. This wasn't just a night out. It was a radical act of visibility — a Black man celebrated on the walls of Paris at the height of the Belle Époque. Lautrec saw people others looked past. That's what made him great.
