About This Print
Klimt. The Kiss. 1907–08. (After.)
Gustav Klimt's The Kiss is one of the most recognised images in Western art. Two figures, wrapped in gold, lost in each other — painted at the height of his decorative period, when he was borrowing from Byzantine mosaics, Japanese prints, and the ancient idea that some moments deserve to be made sacred.
Some images are so powerful that artists keep returning to them. Not to copy — to respond. To ask what the original still has to say, and what a new hand might find in it.
This print is that kind of response. It carries the spirit of Klimt's vision — the gold, the tenderness, the sense that what's happening between these two people exists outside of ordinary time — while bringing its own eye to the subject. Whether it dilutes the original or deepens it is a question every viewer answers for themselves.
Klimt painted one version of The Kiss. It hangs in the Belvedere in Vienna. This is something else.
For those who understand that some images never stop generating meaning.
