About This Print
Tom Thomson never lived to see the movement he started.
In 1917, he was painting Algonquin Park the way no one had before — raw, immediate, electric with colour. The birch trees. The cold lakes. The northern light that doesn't behave the way it should. That summer, he drowned. He was 39.
A few years later, his friends formed the Group of Seven and changed Canadian art forever. But the blueprint was Thomson's.
The Birchgrove is one of those paintings — a small panel sketch, alive with the energy of a man who painted like he was running out of time. Because he was.
