About This Print
Hugo. Victor Hugo. 1802–1885.
He wrote Les Misérables in exile. Napoleon III had seized power, and Hugo refused to stay and watch. He spent nineteen years on the island of Guernsey, writing.
The novel he produced is about justice, poverty, and the stubborn dignity of people the world has decided to forget. Jean Valjean. Inspector Javert. Fantine. The barricades of Paris. It became one of the best-selling novels in history. It is still in print. It will always be in print.
Hugo also saved Notre-Dame. His novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame caused such public outrage at the cathedral's neglect that the government funded its restoration. He wrote a building back to life.
When he died in 1885, two million people lined the streets of Paris for his funeral.
He asked to be buried in a pauper's coffin.
