About This Print
The Fiddler. Marc Chagall.
Marc Chagall grew up in a small Jewish village in what is now Belarus. The fiddler on the roof wasn't a metaphor to him — it was a neighbour. Music played at every wedding, every funeral, every moment that needed to be marked.
When he painted figures floating above villages, lovers suspended in mid-air, fiddlers perched on rooftops, he wasn't being surreal. He was being precise. That's what memory feels like when you're far from home.
Chagall left Russia in 1922 and never really stopped leaving. But the village never left him.
