About This Print
The West Wind is Tom Thomson at his most elemental. Painted in 1917 — the last year of his life — it shows a lone pine tree bent against the force of an Algonquin gale, its roots gripping the rock with the stubbornness of something that refuses to yield. The sky churns. The lake is cold and pewter-grey. And yet the tree holds.
It is perhaps the most Canadian image ever painted — solitary, resilient, indifferent to comfort.
