About This Print
Pablo Picasso didn't paint the guitar — he built one. In 1912, he constructed a guitar from cardboard and string, a scrappy, provisional thing that changed the history of sculpture forever.
Before Picasso, sculpture was carved from stone or cast in bronze — you took away material, or you poured it. His cardboard guitar was assembled from nothing, layered and folded, more like a diagram of a guitar than the thing itself. It was Cubism in three dimensions: multiple viewpoints, fractured planes, the object reimagined rather than represented.
The Museum of Modern Art has the sheet metal version. But it started with cardboard. Picasso always preferred the idea to the finish.
2D to 3D. The next frontier was time — and Picasso had already been there.
